I have been instructed by my wife that I need a new project

We live in a 1970s house with a 1970s staircase.

To start the ball rolling, and as we had nothing else to do, we had a stroll around B&Q

The was basically 3 different materials to choose from (pine, light oak, hemlock)

They obviously had different prices.

My 1st question is, why is hemlock considerably cheaper than oak.

I appreciate it is a soft wood, but does this make it a no no for banisters etc.

Thanks in advance for any advice on this subject

(there will be more questions to come)
