Hi there, I am due to be moving in to my new house soon and wondered if anyone could tell me what this blue part coming off of the main water feed is?

Thanks, hmmm wonder if it will do as good a job as a water softener...me thinks not.

Out of interest, does anyone think I could fit a small water softener in this cupboard? This is a two bed house, so would not be needing anything huge.
