Pipes through floor joists

We recently had central heating installed. While doing some work under the floor recently I noticed that the pipes to one of the radiators both go vertically right through the middle of two floor joists.

Would it be advisable to reinforce the joists? If so is it just a matter of laying a short piece of additional joist alongside the original and bolting either side of the pipe?

Thanks in advance.

Leave well alone - unless the pipe holes are enormous.

Vertically?

Got pics?

So as an example?: if the joist is 195x47, they have drilled a 195 deep hole and reduced the 47 section by about half.

Ditto the

If this is the case then may be worth trimming floor around the pipe

Thanks for the quick responses!

Yes the pipes go through the joists vertically. Joists are 100x50 (4x2), and the holes are about 17mm, so that still leaves about 33mm of "solid" joist. May not be a problem, just wanted to be sure. Cheers.

your joists are 4x2? so this is a double trimmer joist with 2 joists bolted together?

What type of suspended floor arrangement is it, as 4x2 joists are very small?

Are there intermediate concrete supports or similar?

Current bldg regs a 4 x 2 max span for a CEILING joist is about six feet... (ours span about 15' !)

No its not a trimmer joist.

There are intermediate supports so the maximum span is about 8 ft. This is the ground floor of a 100 yr old house.

So these are two seperate joists in different parts of the room? That is very bad workmanship indeed.

They could definately use some extra support if that is the case and your plan to bolt a section of joist along side is probably the best way to go.

Use the same section timber either side and get as long a section as is feasible in there, at least 3 feet or more if possible. Then put some timber connectors between and then bolt it through the lot every 200mm should do it.

Maybe a bit ott but pretty minimal outlay and really with joists that size it's probably worth doing.

that's my 2 cents anyway

bad indeed but what do you expect from a gas fitter installing c/h with a powered drillbit that will zip right through a joist vertically  - the knobheads wouldn`t be so keen if they had to use a brace+ bit like I did when I started - Also used a bender to offset pipes round joists . The more I read on diynot the more I despair of the building industry
