So the wires from the main switch consist of a blue, red, yell/green and a yellowAnd the outdoor light consist of a red, blue, brown and yellow/green wire connected to a box.I connected the light as follows(blue to blue, red to red and earth to earth) and the light works but doesn't switch off.I was wondering whether I have got the connections wrong way round and also what should I do with the yellow write coming from the main switch.Help please

What are the connections in the main switch.

Have you used a test meter to determine which are the live, and neutral wires and what the third wirre does with relation to the switch. There are lots of ways of wiring this.
