Over the years we have had the alarm go off when we were out, for no apparent reason.

Question :- Could a PIR be activated by traffic images through a large mirror? Or by a spider?

Images through a mirror - No

Spider - Yes if it can get inside the pir. Make sure the cable entry hole has some mastic etc over gaps where cable enters the Pir.

How old is the Pir ? newer pirs now have a "pulse count" which basically reduces the sensitivity.

System was fitted in 1993. PIR's are Racal Apollo C

It has to get inside the PIR?
Are you saying, that a spider running across the front of the PIR won't activate it?

Racal Apollo was a good pir. A spider going over the lens unless a b(**dy big one !! would not normally activate it. Make sure the standby battery in the control unit is good, It should normally be replaced every 4 to 5 years. Check all cable connections to pir and in the control unit. If you have more than 1 pir try swapping them over if the fault follows the pir then you have a suspect pir (replace it)

Control battery replaced 3 days ago, New bellbox fitted yesterday because I couldn't find a replacement battery for my flashguard bellbox.

All is OK at the moment.
