Sorry, I originally posted this in the wrong forum:

I recently purchased this LED light from RedHotLed.com:

http://www.redhotled.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=6_19&products_id=118

I need to purchase a PIR with photocell but I wanted some advice on the best one to get.

The lights and PIR will be mounted high on the house about the first floor bedroom window and I’d like the light to activate when somebody walks along the path immediately below it. I therefore need a PIR that I can angle down towards the ground at quite a steep angle.

Any thoughts on what might be a suitable product? Would this be a standard PIR but a specialist bracket?

Thanks, Nick

The PIR I would recommend is the Steinel 180 which fits almost flat against the wall but does "look" at the path directly below it as well as covering up to 12 metres ( this can be reduced by the shrouds supplied )

It is not low cost ( around £35 ) but is very well made., one I installed 15 years ago is still working as when installed.

Three colours black, white or stainless steel

.

I have had a miserable time with those PIRs. I had three from Toolstation and none of these worked properly, or at all, or were subject to switching on if a small gnat went within 200 metres of it.

They are cheap, and with good reason.

In my experience, THESE have proven themselves to do the job.

To Nick: most mains PIR units include a photocell that allows you to control the daylight setting as to when the PIR becomes operational.

PS a 50watt LED is fearsomely bright. Why do you need so much light?

It comes with a 3 year guarantee so no problem.
Changing a duff one that is screwed to the wall is no problem. May be not if it will be replaced free of charge under the guarantee.
I've bought some as I've always found Lidl stuff to be good quality.
How long ago did you buy them and how long have they been in service. Has any one of them provided 15 years of problem free service when fitted to an out side wall exposed to extremes of weather conditions.

Also they look ugly and while they ( claim ) to have 160 degrees of horizontal vision their vertical vision is limited. Still at that price how could you go wrong.

Thanks to all for your help on this. I'm going to go with the more expensive option as I don't want the hassle longer term.

Mainly for security reasons
Ah - you want to make sure that the burglars can see what they are doing - very considerate of you.

or if I'm cooking on the BBQ and want a lot of light
Perhaps I'll start a sweepstake on the question of how long it will be before you find that a fearsomely bright floodlight mounted high up is an appalling way to light a BBQ area.
