PL lights-- Different wattage in same Control Gear???

I have bought some PL lights with 18W lamps. The control gear also has 18W stamped on it.

Does this mean only 18W lamps will work? Or will others work (assuming the same 4 pin shape) but fail early?

That means 18 watts maximum but some will not work correctly if you place a significantly lower wattage lamp in them.

I have found great variability based upon upon make/model.

correct me if i am wrong but different wattages have different shaped bases on them so you will find you may need to change the lamp holder to suit.
