Plaster uplighters, to paint or not to paint?

I'm putting some plaster uplighters up and I don't know if I should be painting them or not.
Is there a recommended way of painting or sealing them or do I just leave them?

I helped a mate put some in and we painted them with white emulsion

paint them in with the walls.

Best with with eggshell or Satinwood.
