I want to plasterboard my garage ceiling to stop the draughts getting into the flat above.
The floor is constructed of bison beams infilled with breeze blocks.
Do i need to batten and nail the plasterboard or will I be able fix it with dot and dab?

Hi Ourian,
Anything constructed overhead in my opinion, should be mechanically fixed for safety reasons,(nails, screws, bolts etc) There is a fair old bit of weight in a sheet of 8'x4' plasterboard, and relying on dot and dab to hold the whole ceiling up in place this way would be a bit worrying. If this was my job,I would drill, plug 'n' screw, say 2" x 1.5"(minimum) battens to the ceiling beams/blocks, and fix the plasterboard in place with 1.5"screws.You might even be able to get some kind of insulation between the battens. The plasterboard I would use for a ceiling is half inch, foil backed. Tape and fill the joints, sand and paint if req/d and that's it. Merry Christmas.

In addition to the above, which is how I would do it, it might be worth considering using a firelined board and sealing the perimeter with a fire rated mastic, if you are having draughts.

Although it is not vital in a garage I would check the battens with a straight edge and use packers to get a nice straight ceiling line.

thanks for the input fellers, I can now proceed with confidence.
Have a good xmas.
