plasterboard over fireplace

I have removed an old wooden shelf and some wood planneling made to look like a cheap mantle/fireplace surround in the spare bedroom.

The existing fireplace had been plasterboarded over and covered in what looks like cement - not plaster. This had to be removed as it was done with the shelf in place and so there was as 5-1cm step. This was all cracked around the joins betweeen plasterboard and exising walls.

The plasterboard was not only fitted over the hole but over the wall - where there is no plaster

Am I best to frame the hole to fix the plaster too and then skim over, applying plaster onto the old render (will pva first) or best to plasterboard right up to the existing plaster work?

Remove whats left of the fire back and brick up the hole.

Then use bonding plaster and multi finish to complete.

Leave a vent hole in the brickwork to install a vent grill.
