Hi

I'm trying to find the most effective and efficient way to repair poorly plastered walls in a Victorian house. The existing plaster is poorly finished and patched in places.

My initial thought is to plasterboard over the existing walls (insulated on two exposed internal walls) and then get a professional to skim the boards.

Any help / advice would be greatly appreciated. If I do plasterboard I don't know if it's easier to batten the walls or dot and dab.

Thanks in advance

You could dab onto the underlying brick if you remove enough plaster, but if you’re fitting insulated boards you’re meant to use a mechanical fixing anyway so may be better battening.

Thanks, I didn't know that you should mechanically fix insulated board although now you point it out that makes sense.

Hadn't thought of that, another option, thanks.

As the existing plaster on the walls is generally sound but poorly finished with trowel marks etc. would I be able to skim straight onto the existing painted walls where we're not using insulated board?

Yes assuming the trowel marks aren’t deep. If they are, might need a tight coat of bonding.
