Is £5500 a reasonable cost to allow for plastering an average four bed house from top to bottom? Only a top skim will be required and most surfaces will be plasterboard.

One guy reckons he can do it for this but said it would take two weeks

Given you say one guy says he can do it for this, implies you have had more than 1 quote.

This is probably the best course of action to get a few quotes - ideally personal recommendations, rather than pulling numbers of random plasterers from Yell. These guys will all get to see the job and confirm if indeed just a skim is sufficient and likely timescales.
You should get your most accurate feel from this.

I would expect it is difficult for a pro to comment on the forum without the chance to see the job 'in the flesh'.
You may get some takers tho....

more than £500 per day for labour  .....a good plasterer will charge £150 to £200 a day.
more prices would be in order methinks and ask for references.

I think there will be 3 of them on site so £500 a day is quite reasonable but when I saw a breakdown of the costs, the lounge which is a 3x3 meter square room was £600, surely that and a ceiling would only take one man two days at most?

I also have a large family/diner/kitchen which is about 28 foot square and they wanted £1400 for that – seems steep!!! Only thing is I want the whole house done at once so I need two-three plasterers to be in at once so it gets done in a week, two max.

the amount of plasterers you have in should make no difference to the cost, in fact it could make it cheaper as the 3rd guy will probably be a labourer.

on my own i do a standard room including ceiling in 2 days, just skimming that is and charge £300-£400 inc. materials for that.

hard to say exactly the costs without seeing it, but the large room costs sounds a little steep, would need plenty of hands for it though, roughly 9mx9m you say?

i don't think you've got any hope of getting the whole house skimmed in a week with 3 guys though IMO, 2 weeks at a push i think.

You want the job doing up to a standard - not to a time scale. If it turns out they are rubbish and you've let them do the whole house - what are you gonna do then?

Let them do just one room so you can judge them. If they are any good let them quote for a couple more rooms.

Act in haste - repent at leisure.

yes some very valid points, one of the problems is we'll have to move in to short term rental whilst the house is being done so we have to get as much stuff done in a small window as £600 a week on rent is a lot to add to the budget.

These guys did come recommended but the cost did seem high, especially for the lounge.

Where in Berks are you . Might be able to sort you out a quote.

yup, unfortunately when you only need to rent for 3-4 weeks the only option is a service like this:

http://www.kfsa.co.uk/kfsa/Home.html

Most of these places come in around £550-£600 per week, if it was just me and the wife then a travel lodge would be cheaper but as she's on maternity leave it's a bit much to ask her to crash in a hotel room for 3 weeks so this is the only option otherwise you get into deposits and DPS etc with other rentals. It usually easier to rent for longer periods, the advantage with places like this is it's daily so you can get out as soon as you're ready, only problem is it's very expensive.
