Ive just knocked out an old fireplace and want to quickly cover it over. Im back to the brick around where it was and was thinking of cutting a piece if plywood to fix over the whole thing (screwing it to the wall) Is it possible to then apply a thin amount of ready mixed plaster over this to meet the originalplaster around the edge? Id then eventually think about paining it over with emulsion in a few weeks when the plasters dry. It doesnt have to be a very exact job, we just need to cover over the gaping whole and exposed brickword for now!

To be blunt - It won't work.

Just use plasterboard instead of ply.

Don't forget though - you need to have a vent when covering a chimney opening or you could suffer damp problems,

Is there a very thin thickness of plasterboard available? The standard grade would be too thick and would protrude out further than the surrounding plaster

Just use normal 12.5mm plasterboard but before fixing it to the wall build a wooden frame on the INSIDE edge of the fireplace, recessed enough to that the plasterboard is 2 - 3mm below the existing plaster surface when fixed in place. Remove a little bit of the plaster skim on the existing plasterwork and then scrim the join and skim.
