Can someone please explain/point me in the direction of a detailed explanation of how to prepare rough plaster for painting?

I'm a complete novice here and really need some proper guidance!

tell us a bit more when you say rough plaster is it a bad plastering job?, if so it may need some sanding down and you may need to use some easifill

if its that bad you might aswell just have it skimmed over again by the bloke who messed it up (IF you have just had it skimmed) or just get someone in to price it for you, will make the job 100 times easier
