Plastic ring on MBSP connector threads

Could anybody enlighten me on the purpose of the plastic ring that is partly along the threaded part on some MBSP connections? If I recall, I only see them on Pressure Relief valves.

Am I correct to assume the purpose is to prevent the "reuse" of old valves?
