Hi chaps,

I read in a thread earlier that platerboard can have a limit to the weight of tiles fixed to it. I have a plasterboard wall of 9mm that i want to tile. Does anybody know what the weight limit for this is or how i find out?

Cheers

Tom

Here are the weight limits as posted in a reply to one of my questions

Plaster 20kg sq/m
Plasterboard 32kg sq/m
Aquapanel 50kg sq/m

I know that both British Gypsum and Knauf recommend 12.5mm board for tiling on or they did when i spoke to them last year. Builders had put up 9.5 board instead of 12.5mm (trying to pull a fast one). Both the above companies said a problem that could occur with 9.5mm board was it could bow under the weight if using heavy weight tiles. The tiles i had were 2.2kg each. Here are the numbers to contact there tech departments

British gypsum 08705 456 123

Knauf 01795 416 259

use 12.5m board with c/c of no more than 400mm on stud when using gypsum based or ply based.

if you use knauf aquapanel (ie cement based) you can use 600mm c/c as it's stronger..... trust me i've done lots or research on this recently.!! (doing supervision of works with 96!!! bathrooms that have all failed for the same reason!)
