Although I know what I'm asking is bad practice i'm not sure if its against regulations - this is not something i'm planning on doing just want some opinions on thoughts.

If someone wanted to install an outside light on their house they would need to notify building control and would need a minor works certificate (unless a new circuit is installed) The light is 'fixed equipment' is wired into the existing downstairs lighting circuit with a short run underground.

Now lets say everything is done correctly, the cable used outside is SWA, the trench is 450mm deep and cable warning tape is installed 200mm from the surface.

Everyone would be satisfied the cable is installed correctly, But what if the light wasnt wired into the downstairs lighting circuit, what if a plug top was installed, when you want the light on you plug it in, this doesnt change the fact the light is fixed but it does mean a certificate is not required (or have I got that wrong?) and does it mean you wouldnt need to notify building control, and would the trench have to be 450mm deep?

As I said above, not something i'm planning on doing.

SWA doesn't go into a plugtop very well!! FCU (and a Minor Works Certificate) would be a bit more professional.
The underground cable will still be notifiable even if it was fed from a plugtop.

hey spark been a while, it was just theory mate and fully agree with FCU however what if the cable was clipped direct? assume you could fit a plug top on the cable could someone install the light without having to notify building control?

If it is fixed wiring outside then I'd still be inclined to think it is still notifiable as a "special installation".

fair enough mate I assume it would come under part p but i cant find anything to back up my thoughts and was looking for other peoples opinions
