Please Help! - Boiler constantly firing.

That sounds as if everything is working normally although the calibration of the room stat may be incorrect.

Again I dont understand how you have apparently never turned it down before to turn off the boiler!

Tony

if your wall stat is turned down is the programmer switched on/off for heating ?

have you 1 of these

or 2 of these

in the airing cupboard.

Just checked the airing cupboard - I can see one of the second ones (the one that looks straight across the bottom rather than a 'T')...just one though, can't see two, should they be together? Sorry for being so useless at all this!

Thanks for trying to help despite my uselessness!

Jo

If that is the case then it proves that the room stat is getting a stray live from somewhere. As i mentioned before its best to get the programmer checked out as it could be faulty wiring behind that or the programmer itself that is faulty.

You could try turning the room stat back up to 20 or until it clicks and make sure the boiler starts to fire. Then remove the programmer from its back plate and see if this switches everything off. If all stays running then you have a wiring fault. If it cuts out then chances are its a dodgy programmer.

If it does carry on running then the next thing to check would be the wiring centre that should be located in the airing cupboard.

It may be getting a bit in depth now but at least you can point the building guys in the right direction. Other than that a good local RGI should be able to find the fault within the hour and the cost of that will be paid back in your bills!!

Just one rad will not cost £600 for a quarter of heat!

I still find all this strange because you imply that you lived all winter with freezing temperatures outside with only one radiator heating the house!

Heating a standard cylinder will use about 5-10 kWH

Tony

Exactly - its crazy. I'm not implying it, I'm stating it. It wasn't even our intention to have that one radiator on...I'd have turned it all off at the mains if I'd realised the boiler was burning gas for no purpose.

When people in the press have made comments about turning thermostats down etc to save fuel costs I've been thinking they're crazy given how we've been living...blankets, jumpers etc etc.

When you first moved in and before seeing large gas bills, did you heat the house with all the rads and the TRVs set to about 3-4 and have the house at about 21° like normal people?

Or did you set out to live with no heating at all from the outset?

Tony

Like i said, remove the programmer and turn up the room stat and see if it fires. That will give you an indication as to where the fault lies.

Oh and dont touch any of the live wires or you'll be warmer than you ever needed!!

it don't have to be metal.
can you not get any pics.

i would say metal one is the pump.

Getting a little technical for me to try I think! - But thank you, it's very helpful.

'Like normal people' hahahaha thanks.

Not sure why you need to know but....we moved in when the weather was good so had little need for radiators, after we got the first bill we freaked thinking what on earth it would have been had we had them switched on so, they've been off ever since then - needless to say, it's made no difference.

Sorry - can't help with pics...can give you serial codes/names etc though - would that help any...unless there's some pics online somewhere that I could choose from and tell you what it looks like?
