Hi there,

Literally a couple of weeks before we are due to replace our aging Potterton 10-16 heat only boiler it appears to have packed up.

When it should be firing up to supply the central heating system it just makes a loud humming noise and does nothing.

Being an IT chap I've tried all I know (turning it off and back on!) but other than that I'm outta ideas.

Anyone got any ideas of things I should try?

Yeah possibly or some kind of pump?

Whatever it is it just hums though and doesn't fire up. :?

Sounds like fan stuck but I wouldn't bother as they are a positive pressure appliance and will leak products of combustion back into the room if the casing seal is damaged. get yourself a couple of cheap fan heaters until it's replaced.

Thanks for the tips guys, it seems we are only going to go less than a week without heating as we've booked the new boiler install for Thursday. Yay! :D

So immersion heaters then...

...we've never used ours. I know this is a bit of a "how long is a piece of string question" but veeeery roughly how long would the immersion need to be on to heat a stone cold tank of water up to something you could run baths from?

Is it like an hour or more like many hours (4? 6?)? I've just no idea how long to leave it on for before we need it for baths.

Cheers,

Andy

Just to answer me own question (in case anyone finds this by searching).

I found that having the immersion (which I found was 3kw) on for about 1hr 20 mins was enough to get the water hot enough a decent bath. That might have been too long though?
