Hi.
I am trying to plaster my out house to make it into a roon. It is just brick walls, they are not damp as far as i know as i dont have any damp patches.....I just dont know where to start but need to do it as cheap as poss....lol
Any ideas?? x

If it's not damp at all then dot and dab plasterboard onto the walls and fill the joints as normal. You will probably find though it is only single skin and therefore prone to water ingress from driving rain etc. May not have a dpc either. Good luck.

If it’s a single skin wall, it will be subject to damp; ordinary PB just D&D on there will fail in a very short time & your likely to get musty smells from manifestation of mould behind the boards. Plastering directly onto a single skin wall without preventing damp penetration will also fail. Treat the wall with an SBR sealant, fix treated timber battens to the wall & fix Duplex (foil backed) board fixed onto the battens; skim the boards afterwards or tape & fill using taper edge boards.

But if the construction of the floor has no damp membrane or no DPC in the walls then whatever you do will only have a limited life.

Making a silk purse out of a sows' ear is fine until the cold weather arrives.

If you intend using this space as habitable, and do not insulate properly, then it will be a condensation nightmare. Black mould everywhere.

No amount of external damp prevention will ever stop this from happening, though limiting the amount of external damp ingress will make the place more comfortable.

Disclaimer – I’m no expert, this is all advice based on personal experience.

Don’t bother with it!

Honestly, if it’s an out-house like most others then you’re wasting time and money. If you want to use the space then knock down the building and build it properly.

The room will almost certainly be single skinned and sealing that will cost more than it’s worth. You can’t just skim a single skinned outside room and use it. Damp will come through and condensation will make it unusable.

If you baton the walls, insulate, plasterboard and skim you’ll be reducing the size of the room and making a health hazard as you’ll be supplying a breading area for mould.

How big is the out-house and what do you want to use it for?

Why dont you tile it? With a bit of preparation you could tile it floor to ceiling and get the floor tiled first. There would still be damp in the walls but it might see you for a few years,,,Just an idea
