I have a feeling you got the wires crossed.
Plumbers mait is for sealing waste pipes, sink wastes, cast iron gutters etc, most plumbers use silicon mastic now.
Sanitary fixings ,wastes etc.

this is a good point, i have used plumbers mait putty to seal my bathroom waste - i have heard silicone is used more now tho but a bugger to get off when changing a waste outlet, etc?!!! is plumbers blue a good jointing compound to use around tap holes/waste etc? i have heard it is the best one but not sure where i heard it!!!

Plumber mait allows you to take the fittings apart in the future.
