we're taking the bath out of our house to which we have recently moved and have found an old capped galvanized pipe sticking out of the wall. It is too far out for us to tile over and we do not know if it is live. Can anybody advise us how find out if this is live as we need to cut it back further.

without tracing it back or taking the cap off, how will anyone know if its live.

Jut bear in mind it could be gas as it wasn't unusual in older houses to have gas in the bathroom for a water heater.

Tracing it back may be the only way to confirm. The only plus side is that you should only need to trace in straight lines to follow the pipe run.
