I will be replacing a run of fencing and using postcrete for the post holes. I understand you need some hardcore in the bottom of the hole before putting the post in but once the post is in and before adding the postcrete, can you add some more hardcore, say 100mm deep around the base of the post and pack it down hard?

I've read some books that say you don't need concrete, just hardcore packed in hard round the post - is that strong enough?

Also, can you mix the dry postcrete with some hardcore before adding to the hole to make it stronger and make it go further?

Oh, and and can you use ballast for the bottom of the holes (easy to buy in bags from wickes)

concrete costs pence. Dont use hardcore. Fill the hole with postcrete or concrete. Job done and it wont move for years
