Hello all

I have a Potterton Profile 40e boiler.

I have a Potterton control unit that has a seperate switch for central heating and for hot water. Each switch can be set to off, timed, once or on. There are 2 timer period options, the timer period is not unique to the central heating or hot water.

I have not had the central heating on over the summer.

I had previoulsy set the timer to turn the hot water on in the morning and in the evening. When the hot water was on, I noticed that some of the radiators in the house would get warm. Also, there would be a whirring noise coming from the airing cupboard, which I traced to the British Gas MultiHead 2.

Maybe this was a sign of things to come, but the easiest option (which I chose) was to stop the hot water coming on in the morning so that the noise did not wake me up, and to leave the timer coming on in the evening as I wouldn't then hear the noise!

Last night however, this whirring noise woke me up at 3am! Very confused, I went to the control unit and noticed that the light indicating that the hot water was on, was on. I swtiched the hot water from timed to off, but the light stayed on and the boiler remained on. The only way I could get the boiler to turn off was to turn the dial on the front of the boiler to 0. Everything then, including the whirring noise, stopped.

As soon though, as I turn the dial on the front of the boiler back up, it fires up and the hot water system seemingly comes on (the light on the control panel lights up).

I have not yet attempted to turn the central heating on.

I have read a few similar topics on this forum, and can provide the following information that seemed to be questioned in similar circumstances:

The Multi Head is set to 2. I have a 3 bedrom semi. The noise does reduce when I change it to 1, but is still there just quieter, so I have switched back to 2 as that is the original setting.

I have a Drayton Mid Position Actuator. When I first noticed the problem, and I assume when the hot water system was seemingly on, I think it was on setting H. When I turned the boiler setting to 0, I think is was on setting W. Either way, I am happy that the black switch is moving OK.

Can anyone offer any help or advice on what the problem might be? I am guessing one of the control panel, Multi Head or Mid Position Actuator could be faulty, but do not really know where to start.

Also, does anyone know whether this would be covered by a Home Protect Emergency Cover I have with my bank, who stipulate that they will provide cover up to £250 for labour and parts in order to 'avoid more damage, make your home fit to live in or restore electricity, gas or water'. Obvioulsy, I still have heating and water, but not working properly, so not sure whether this will qualify.

Any help or advice would be very greatfully received!

Thanks.

Get your wallet out and call in a heating engineer. It does sound from your description that you may have more than a couple of faults.
Pump noise(pos new pump) 3 port valve or programmer. A good repair specialist will diagnose fairly quickly and offer advice on site.
As for your cover, contact the provider. Don't hold your breath.

Thanks for positive and constructive advice.

If anyone else has any advice or thoughts, so that I can at least look like I know what I am talking about when I have to 'get my wallet out', it would be very much appreciated.

I did not mean to be sarcastic as you infer with your reply.
From your description of your system faults I suspect you have more than one and as such its difficult to point you in the right direction as to what is wrong.
If you do call in a pro then describe the symptoms and let him diagnose the fault. No need to tell him what you think may be wrong, it causes confusion.
Once again no offence intended.
If you intend to attempt a diy repair then that is another matter.
