I have recently traded in a (very old) fridge.

It was Electrolux system with no compressor, I kept it because it was practically silent and useful for keeping the guest room beer in.

Since I took it out my electricity consumption has dropped by 5kWh/day

Yes, that's 150kWh per month. About £15. I could have bought a new one on the savings.

This seems surprising to me. Were old fridges really that inefficient?

That type of fridge was known as an absorbtion fridge, no compressor, instead it had a small heater to drive the gas cycle.
