Radiator will ALWAYS be hot at the top unless there is air in the radiator in which case bottom rib/ channel will be hot and top cold

The difference in temperature between inlet and out let of the radiator is dependent how well balanced the system is

Powerflushing and chemical cleansing will fix nothing if circulation is imbalanced.

One thing on this forum you definitely "can" DIY is a drain and refill with appropriate treatments to the system. This is because is is time consuming rather than complex (although there are certain issues involved).

Look up how to do it yourself. If it goes on to require a powerflush then you have only spent a little money (on chemicals) and your own time.

But, as DP has said, look up how to balance your system first!

To what degree are they "cooler.

Your plumber probably does not have a PF machine. IMO a PF, carried out properly, cannot fail to be better than a chemical cleanse. That is not necessarily to say that either is actually required.

Yes, a PF is always going to be better than a chemical flush.

But a mains water powered flush through each rad in turn can also be pretty good as well for very little outlay.

A "chemical flush" is usually putting sludge removing chemicals in a system and using it on heating for a few hours/weeks depending on the chemical can also be pretty good but only on a lightly dirty system.

A very dirty system will usually need a proper power flush.

If you have an open-vented old system, and can do basic DIY, a simple chemical clean is so cheap and easy that you may as well start there.

If you can do simple plumbing, adding a system filter will catch a lot of the remaining circulating particles. You will be amazed and gratified to see how much. We don't know what the cause of your problem is, so a clean may not cure it, but it will do some good.
