prep for varnished door

Hi guys. I am wanting to change the colour of our front door to black to hide the horrible spray paint that the previous tenants left on it. It seems to be varnished and already had a tin of Ronseal exterior wood paint and was wondering if it was suitable. If so, I'm unsure on the best way to prep the door before I can use it. Any advice would be great
