Hi we are looking at scimming our bedroom and in the past have had advise that differs from contractor.
Walls are sound but over time layers of DIY and painting have left them needing a skim, what advise would you give would the old paint need to be removed of is it ok to leave and get contractor to skim straight over it.
Many thanks.
Alan

if the paint is sound you can use pva but if the paint is also shiny you may reuire a bonding agent to provide a key such as wickes bonding agent, blue grit, or bond it.
what advice have you been given and what do the contractor want to do?

Hi Steve
Thanks foryour reply.
Some contractors say they have to completly strip the old paint off where another said PVA and bonding agent on old paint before rescim
Cheers, Alan

if you have been given those 2 choices, then you have some spreads that think the paint is sound and the others looks like they think its not sound either that or they dont know how to prepare painted surfaces for a reskim and want it all taken off, what do you think? is the paint stuck to the wall ok?, try a test get some gaffer tape and stick it on the paint and rip it off to see if any paint comes off, if the paint is stuck good you know which plasterer to choose

As long as the plaster is sound & the paint is stuck to it, you can just skim over with the right prep; no need to remove paint unless there are adhesion problems. Gaffa tape sticks like the proverbial to a blanket though & may be a little too harsh a test :? ; I usually test with 1” Selotape.

Gaffa tape will tell you if the skim is well stuck on though

No problem but its one serious test; if it passes that, at least you know it’s practically bullet proof. I also pull off slowly & evenly rather than ripping it off; again, that can prove too much even for reasonably good paint adhesion.

Are we talking about the same thing here? Is “Duck” tape the same as Duct (Gaffa) tape; that looks more like selotape than the Duct tape I use!

here is a link to there tape http://duckbrand.com/Products/duck-tape.aspx they do all sorts of strengh tbh this is my wall and later im going to be hacking all the skim off because its a pile of s**t, underneath is seraphite with a lot of cracks in so that may have to come off as well ive already taken one wall back to brick and floated it it back with hard wall (i had to do that one cause of sparky doin electrics) the wall was so bad i just took the lot off, but to get back to the tape i first done the test with black gaffer tape which was stronger than this one but i couldent find it, so i done it with the duck tape
and i got the same result with both, the gaffer tape dident pull the skim off lol but yes if the skim was a bit flakey then i suppose it might pull it off , but cello tape for me would be to weak in my opinion you have to give it a good old test im not sure if cello tape is up to it

If you 'sparrowpeck' the walls with a scutch hammer/claw of hammer then you provide a phsical key as well as the chemical key of PVA/Bondit

Then th epint being sound or otherwise is not an issue. OBviously anything loose should be taken off.

Just make sure you brush whatever bonding agent you are using well into the pecks. I'd advise giving it a coat teh day before to avoid the pecks drying out the plaster
