I am looking for advice on which product to use 'seal' the red cedar cladding on my new garden building in order to preserve the original colour.

Products which I have looked at before are more orientated to decking and appear to be more of a varnish than an oil.

Any advice gratefully received. Thank you

Oils have a short life, but most people think they look better.

Do not use varnishes on external cladding, ever.

Stains last years, but do change the appearance somewhat, come in lots of colours and levels of pigmentation "clear" stains may last a short time, depending on exposure.

So you need to think about maintenance vs character

Many Thanks for the responses. Good point about the maintenance over character.

Looking at some of the varnish on other external furniture it seems to age rather quickly and appears 'brittle'/ I will certainly take a look at the oil.

Once again thank you :)

The beauty of oil is that it's really, really quick to apply, and doesn't need much in the way of surface preparation. The UV protection in the Osmo oil should help retain the original colour. There is also a cedar-tinted oil for restoring the colour to cedar that has silvered, that gives a passable result.

Cheers
