Is there a book anywhere or a website which would help to price up jobs. I find it hard to know what to charge.

What should i be charging for a new kicthen extension to be wired, which consists of 6 double s/o, outside s/o + security light, 3 fsu (appliances), cooker cicuit and 10 spotlights?

Any ideas?

Just looking for some advice mate, i know its DIY but a little advice from fellow tradesmen dosn't go a miss. If its only DIY then why give advice on Kicthen/bathroom wiring which comes under part P? Surely we can all help each other out

We can't stop people working on their electrics, Part P or no Part P. But in your case, you are working for a paying customer, and that's not the spirit of the forum.

I trust you are Part P & have PLI?

You could go and ask on some of the 'other' forums but most decent sparkies wont discuss prices on forums open to the public.

Ask the trades have a trade only board but they'll qualify u before you allowed to play.

Spon's book on estimating is OK but the prices are way out of date. It will give u a list of what u need for a number of (major) tasks like rewire, wiring a row of new houses, etc. Again not DIY stuff.

charge by the hour and add on materials and parts? i thought this was how most sparks did it.

Thats not quite right about Spons. They give you the labour times for everything so as long as you use your own labour rate and current material prices then you wont go far wrong

Why not try a price per point and add a little extra if its a long run of cable.

Sockets and fsu £35 per point, downlighters £20 per point and then add on how much you charge for certificate.

This is just a guide

Don't fall into the trap that I did when first pricing.
I used to give my prices to the builder involved, then he would stick his 'bit' on. !
(I didn't realise but they were sticking on loads of ££££). It was only when I was questioned by a customer to justify the outrageous pricing that I became aware.( I am not talking the odd fifty here by the way.)
I now meet and go through every job with the customer themselves.
I give them the price, and don't involve the builder at all in money matters.

Do you play darts ???? if so then maximum score is a nice 'round figure' innit. ( one a day would be nice !! )

Add materials.

Do you have to charge extra for the cost of running a company ????

If your starting out, don't do any price work just yet, but try and work out how long it would take you to do so ,as you do it. Do a few job's and work out if you would have made more on price/daywork ??? Go from there..

These are only my personal thought's.

I hope this is of some interest, i'm looking forward to some unfriendly fire here !!!!

Pricing guidelines:

Think of number
if customer works for a call centre add 40%
if customer works in public service or charity deduct 20%
if house has electric gates or a tradesman's entrance: look at car numberplate and add some noughts (just to cover the case where the plate is TTC1, eg!)
