Can anybody explain what a primatic cylinder is, and more importantly how it works. We have a gas fired central heating system, running with 1 header tank (not the usual 2)and an open system into a 'Primatic Cylinder'. Its proving very difficult finding out how the cylinder works. I know that it hold both house and heating water, but I'm not sure how. Any ideas???

I remember those prehistoric things. Problem I see was that no inhibitor could be added to the radiator side as it could escape into the hot water. Best consigned to the bin when you can and replace with a bigger hot water cylinder. My sister had a neat one with additionally two electrical heater elements (at different heights) for summer use.
