hi ,have just bought a printer/copier/scanner lexmark x1180 & the hardware on the cd will not load, says "the system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications "have rang their technical helpline in india and was told my computer needs updating  I am running xp with the service pack sp2.
any help would be appreciated as i'm going mad

This is a common problem. You didn't say, but I would guess it's complained about autoexec.nt in C:\Windows\System32? The SP2 upgrade has a habit of deleting this file :( . Fortunately, there is a copy held in the repair folder :).

If this is the message you are seeing, do the following, otherwise, post the file it's complaining about.

Open a command prompt (START>RUN & type CMD and press ENTER)

now type :

COPY C:\WINDOWS\REPAIR\AUTOEXEC.NT C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Reboot the system and then try installing the printer again. Remember, software first.

Cheers

Ian

You'll need to re-install it at some stage. Just make a note of the procedure, should the file get deleted again.
