I've been asked to look at a staircase that squeaks and has a loose newel at the top. I haven't seen it yet, but I'm hoping I can just screw through the treads or risers into any glue blocks used to stop the squeaks (a stair carpet is going on afterwards). I guess the newel post is loose on the string or where two sections are used for decorative effect. Either way, I'm unsure as to fixing it. Any advice would be much appreciated.
