Hello,

I have a MAIN Combi 24 HE, I had it installed approximately 3 years ago, about a month ago it was showing the "Flame failure" LED, I read the book stated an internal error or a blocked flue on the trouble shooting guide that came with the boiler. I did not understand what it meant, so i reset the system, and this worked. About 3 weeks ago one of the pipe underneath was leaking not a lot but the occassional droplet. I have been resetting the system now and again for about 4 weeks now. About 2 weeks ago i called a plumber told him about the requirement to reset the boiler and he stated like a car if it works periodically it is very hard to diagnose the problem unless you remove and check all parts which he stated would be expensive due to labour costs, and recommended leaving it until it stops working completely. I think that time is soon.

Today I tried putting on the heating, didn't work, reset and it did but only for a while, it then starting vibrating and hissing like a pressure cooker, it shut itself down. I took off the main cover to reveal the pilot lights. I turned the CH on again, also run the hot water, didn't work, so again reset, it lit and the flames were burning, the flames then burnt quite violently along with the pressure cooker sounds, and shut itself off.

My questions are:

1. Any idea what this could be, I have looked at the manual fault finding and from what i gather (i stress i know nothing about boilers) replace PCb after checking ignition electrode and leads, or replace gas valve electrical plug/igniter assy. Hoping you may have a better idea.

2. On the assumption you know what the problem could be, do you know approx costs, and if so in your opinion would be cost affective to take advantage of the british gas fixed price.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

If you want to get it done properly, get baxi/potterton out to do it rather than ****ish gas, chances are they will turn up and tell you that it is not a boiler fault, but that you need a £800 powerflush.
It could be kettling in which case it is worth flushing the system before calling heatteam out.

Thank you for your quick responses, The pump is vibrating and getting hot, so i think its working, but wouldn't know for sure.

The boiler sounds like its about to light but doesn't. tried this morning and think the system has had it. We had problems with the boiler about 2 years ago, this resulted in a new pump required due to sludge build up. Which was replaced and the system flushed free of charge by the plumber who installed the boiler originally.

So am i right in thinking the same thing is happening again. Would it be a good idea to look in the pump to see what comes out.

I just checked the water inside the pump and comes out clear, not sure how relevent this it, but last time when i needed the pump replaced it came out very dark and sludgy.

You should not have opened the combustion area as that needs a gas registered engineer.

Your problem is probably a circulation problem and the first thing to check is the pump. Look in the FAQ on this site and you will see many checks you can do which are primarily associated with the pump turning ( or not ). They get very hot if they are NOT turning!

If the pump is OK then its probably scaled up or sludged up!

is the filter in the return valve clean
turn off 22mm valves on boiler and drain boiler
remove cap on return pipe and remove filter and check.
