Ok, update! The chap from BG here, and he's checking the 'primary sensor' before he fits a new HE....Hmmm.

Bloke just left. Really can't complain today! The engineer changed the primary sensor and cleaned the HE out. Wasn't much dirt in there so he didn't feel that we needed a new one. He was polite, and thorough and was keen to try and save me having to pay out anymore than I had to. Got his name and I'll be writing a letter of commendation to BG about him.
Still going to get a quote for having a magnaclean fitted though. Job done, I'm off for a shower! Thanks to everybody who replied to my initial questions.

lol...not really....christ knows what the first guy was on about if it only needed a thermistor
