hi all
can i disconnect the c/h side of a programmer and just put a on/off switch on
till i get a new programmer

It all depends. Make and model of programmer would be useful.
Programmers usually take live mains in to power the clock and the same live is then fed out as a call for heat, via room stat etc.
Sometimes the programmer does just provide a pair of switched contacts.

worcester bosch heatslave 12/14 oil combi boiler. no room stat just the programmer on boiler

Looks like mains live goes to the programmer as 'Brown' and this exits the programmer as White for 'HW' and as Grey for 'CH'

so what wires would you put to a switch for the heating side

To simulate exactly what the programmer does when the CH comes on, you would put a switch between Brown and Grey.
