Hi,
I have a playstation2 (slimline if that makes any difference) which was working fine up until a few months ago when all of a sudden it started saying it was unable to read disc. I have read articles on the internet suggesting it is a laser problem. The thing that is confusing me most is that it plays audio cd's but not dvd's and also plays some games discs. I thought it might be to do with the amount of use the game has had but some that it wont play have hardly ever been played.

Might there be a setting that I am not aware of that may have been altered by my young kids ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Might be possible that it has 2 lasers, one for CD's one for DVD?

You can google it, I can't be ars** ;)

Could try cleaning the lenses - maybe used compressed air gun.

Check disks for finger marks scratches etc

had the same problem.

It was that the lens was dirty.

Didnt bother with the air gun, thought it was a lost cause so i used vodka and kleenex.

Hey presto i have a ps2 that i didnt expect to have back!

I tried one of those cleaning CD's but still doesn't work. What brand of Vodka did you use ? Not the good stuff I hope

You only need enough to dab a cotton bud in..... :D

thats right, i used a cotton bud.

makes no difference really. just be careful and use the bad vodka...

what am i saying, all vodka is bad!

This is classic PS2 behaviour. Sometimes the lens is dirty, sometimes the laser needs calibrating.

Abundant information on both of these is all over the Interwebby.
