I understand what the probem is as I have it too. I also needed to replace a cord and when I removed the cover the insides sprang out. I did get a brief look at them first and have put things back the way I thought they were but to no avail.

What I really need is something to show me how all the little bits fit together inside the part that is still connected to the ceiling. There are 2 springs, and various plastic and metal elements but it is impossible to guess the correct order. If someone has a diagram or a link to one that shows which part fits in what, that would be great. I agree that is seems wrong to call an electrician out just to put the bits back.

Buy a new pullswitch, but see if you can get one where you don't have to open the the rose to change the cord. When you change the switch, please identify the wires and their locations in your old switch before you undo them.

First of all thanks for the replies. Interstingly that is the conclusion I had come to. Getting a new one seems the easiest thing to do.

Secondly sorry that posting my comment was considerded hijacking. I thought I was just adding to the discussion which did not seem to warrant a separate posting but now I know different.
