That
was an interesting thread but the thing wasn't scaled - HW flow/temp fine.

Customer has been on on BG's cover at about £300pa for several years .
BG had been recently to the boiler because it had cut out. They put a new DHW flow switch in.
Also said that it needed a new main heat exchanger, talked of £600, and said it "Could go at any time" and needed a new boiler, about £3000. The boiler did go out once since the BG visit, and the hapless customer had to call her son (car mechanic) to light it, which he found very difficult. Owner petrified, family feeling they have to keep frail mum warm.

H/E wasn't leaking, though it badly needed a brush. Thermocouple looked new, but the fixing nut was missing and it was mounted too low, so not getting hot enough. There was a new, used matchstick inside the combustion chamber, not near the window - someone had been in there.
Lighting the pilot and heating the t/c with a match, it held, but heat from the pilot was not enough to heat the t/c in a reasonable time.

Hmmm.
