I noticed an ad in Yellow Pages with a company who supplies Rehau frames to the trade (which I'm not). They also stated they welcome domestic enquiries.

So I contacted them and supplied them with the measurements and they have provided me a quote for the frames, glass and delivery. It's a very good price.

They said they can recommend a fitter, though this is someone independent, as they don't fit windows themselves.

I'm wondering what are the pitfalls of doing this though? I suppose the measurements could be wrong, for example.

Anyone here done this? Thanks

Get someone who knows what they are doing to survey.
Unless your prepared to sit read and absorb about 5000 pages of regulations (some of which you have to buy a copy) its just not worth doing yourself.

One slight mistake and it could cost you hundreds. Even alot of pros are failing the new tests we are having to take (86% fail rate for one of the large national company's I have heard).

Also measuring windows and doors well takes years of experience.

The actual fitting is fairly easy.

Preferably someone who will guarantee in writing that they will meet regulations for building control sign off.

It's a bit odd how after all your online research and the numerous questions on other forums you've opted for the yellow pages?!
Going direct to a supplier and using a different installer sometimes has it's problems.
1. You don't know what the fitters work is like!
2. Any non fitting issues after the installation will be down to you to contact the supplier to rectify
3. Would the fitter give a guarantee on windows he hasn't measured, supplied? I know most wouldn't
4. Measuring the windows would be down to you ( like Gaz said, costly if wrong)
You really are better off in the long run getting in a company to survey, install, sign off and guarantee. You'll be hassle free, do your homework on the right company, the price wouldn't be that much more

Ps
The chances that you've contacted our supplier is quite high based on your location, the chances that our supplier recommends us to you is also high.
Would we want to get involved in a situation like this? Probably not, many fitters out there will though, finding a good one you trust is key

All the best though

I wouldn't say I've opted for Yellow Pages, it's simply that I had looked there as well as other locations for potential sources of windows and potential installation companies.
