Hi,

Could anyone advise on this problem with a push-button toilet? If the button is pressed gently, the toilet flushes correctly and the cistern fills and stops. If the button is pushed hard, the cistern does not fill, and water keeps running.

Taking a look inside the cistern - what happens is that when the button is pushed, part of the mechanism goes up. When it is pushed hard, it sticks.

How can I fix this?

Paul.

The siphon unit is at fault.

Its not re-seating itself correctly after you flush it but give it some respect when you do push it

Just to clarify,

We can't rely on visitors/children pressing the button gently. Also, I'd rather fix the mechanism than remember to be gentle with it - it seems to be getting worse over time.

Any thoughts as to what might be making it stick, and how to fix it?

What oph said. Turn the water supply to the cistern off and take the mechanism out, you'll probably find that something is worn/bent/badly adjusted, it is only plastic after all.

It may be less hassle in the long run to just replace the unit.
