some inlet valves have a habit of going clunk as the float stops the flow of water through the valve into the cistern. If the inlet valve has a service or ball fix valve fitted underneath, try reducing the flow rate by turning the slot a little. The cistern will fill a little slower but this may remedy the problem... it has worked for me on occasion.
