i need to put up a washing line.

one end can tie around a large tree. can the other end be fixed to the side of the house? would this put too much weight on the brickwork? if this is ok, what kind of fixings would you recommend? my old line had two fixings, at the top was a wheel and then a hook further down to make it easier to tighten the line and distribute the load i guess. what would this be called?

cheers

you can fix it to the house.

One way of reducing the risk that the hook will fall out, or the brick, is to put it in the side of the house, so the pull is at 90 degrees to the shaft of the fixing; and at least two bricks from the corner of the wall. you can use a "vine eye" which has a long shaft, or a Shield Anchor fixing which needs a bigger hole but is very strong.

cool. thanks for the quick reply. i thought about putting it on the side of the house but there is no real space to do this.

will check out the fixings you mentioned.

thanks.

Didn't Michael Palin do an informative film on this very problem??
Pole to Pole I think it was called.

we tried that what with cheap eastern european labour, but they kept walking off before the washing was dry!
