Putting up and joining curtain rails

Can't work out how to join this curtain rail. It doesn't look right the way I've done it. The connecting bit with little screws looks wrong somehow.

Also, generally when you put up these rails is it a case of measuring up from top of window in middle then marking the other two spots only using spirit level 2.5 cm to right of window?

Why haven't you screwed the screws all the way in? and why does one screw look closer to the end than the other?
 
You won't be able to fully close your curtains with that set up.
Are there no instructions with the rods? Google them if you know the name.

With a window that size single length curtain rails are not easily available so as you have found you need to use 2. Rather than butt them together you would normally bend a dog leg into the end of one of them & overlap it over the other ( one rail for each curtain ), this then allows the curtains to overlap & close properly.
