Hi alastair, thank you for the quick reply, i want to find something to add to the masonry paint to help it stick to the wall, [has not been painted before] so i would only need to paint it once,

Water (this is not a joke)

in the first mist coat. Instructions will almost certainly be on the tin. If the surface is very hungry I sometimes apply two thinned mist coats, you will easily see when it stops being sucked in.

Hi john, is there nothing i can add to the masonry paint that would allow me to paint the house just the once, don't think i could manage it more than once, [ill health]

In a word... NO. John is right.. mist coat then further coats untill it looks ok. Stabilser is only used when the surface is powdery and flaking. PVA should not be used underneath emulsion as it will probably come off.

Hi guys, just checked the tins of textured masonry paint and there's no mention of the ratio for mixing with water to thin down, any idea's.

I would put a couple of pints of water to a 5 litre tin of paint. It will be quite thin but this is a mist / sealer coat to bind the dry surface together first prior to an further thicker coats going on.

If I were you I'd give the wall a good brush and hose down then use the paint as the manufacturer tells you to. Most masonry paints are quite thin these days.

Stir thoroughly before use with a palette knife or similar implement.
Thinning is only necessary when sealing new for bare surfaces in which case add up to 1 part water to 5 parts Weathershield Textured Masonry Paint.
2 full coats of Weathershield Textured Masonry Paint are normally required. However, on previously painted surfaces in good condition, where similar colours are used, 1 coat may be sufficient

i am taking the stabilizer back to the shop and going for 2 coats of watered down masonry paint, and then full strength coat. :D
