I have a chimney stack/breast that I'd like to take down (from top to bottom)

The plan was to get the roofer to take down the stack to below roof level, then make good the roof area

However is it possible to take the breast down in the loft when the wooden roof supports appear to be embedded in the chimney breast?

What is the solution in this situation?

everything is possible.

additional support will be required, i'm not sure exactly how, hopefully someone else will comment with more knowledge

Very unlucky there. Take a few bricks out above the timber and see if the roofs sitting on the chimney or going through the middle to the wall

Clearly someone has been "messing" with your roof. A bit more investigation required!
