Question for all...COSTS

ZenStalinist said:
Ah... Is this so you know how high to hike the costs of your new 'project', FWL?

Nope, don't be so cynical, how would I be hiking prices anyway if it is my intention to undercut the like of Screwyou and TLC?

I intend to make money from high turnover and low margins whilst keeping costs to a bare minimum required to provide a quality service.

I take it your advertising post has been removed... ? Porbably infringes on the "we support Screwflix.corp" element...

Open up free trade... prevent censorship... !!

Funky, initialy main stream electrical install merchandise, however I intend to move it into Van sales and leasing within about 6 months hopefully.

I will always be open to product suggestions, I have a few ideas, but I want to concebrate on the main stream first.

Makes sense... one thing I can tell you from a personal perspective though, is that I've spent about 3 months looking for the "right" bits that I want for my house (hence reason for finding the forum in the first place) and I've noticed a distinct lack of "suitability" where products are concerned. e.g. an integrated socket that combines networking, TV, phone, Sat & phono in anything other than white... (thankyou for helping me out on that one, btw, but still searching for same in antiqued chrome... lol)

Maybe apply your obvious consultative approah to the way that you "do business" in terms of sales...

Potentially offer a "house pack" service... selling everything you would need for X job based on the end users preferences and sourcing it all, selling it as a job lot... not sure how feasible it would be, but I'm sure a bloke with your savvy might be able to work some kind of package together...

I suppose, in essence, what I'm saying is there seems to be a lack of that which might be considered to be "specialist" orientated suppliers offering good advice. For instance, one of the things that I'm quite keen on in the rewire that I'm about to undertake is to wire in future possibilities... e.g. CAT6, home audio, etc. When I've approached electricians for quotes to do the job, I only ever get quoted for the electrical side (is this fear I wonder??) At the same time, I've been looking into the whole x10 / CBus home automation scene, as it seems like common sense to integrate the systems that we pay seperately for, and again... apart from techy types, the market is not explored.

Sorry for the witter, but this is something that I've noticed about the great british public (oooh, controversy), but we do tend to make do and mend instead of asking ourselves... why can't I have a bit of techinical excellence in my own home? Your post about the Novel Shower proved how interested "people" are in a) excellence & b)genious... and yet it was a solution that is so simple (and probably cheaper) than the options available "normally"...

In terms of products, you should do a shower kit as part of your line up too... basically replicate the gear you went out to fix... put me down for one...

Again, apologies for the ramble...

Funky, I couldn't agree more with your comments about the "Great British Public"

Regarding the house pack, already being formulated, along with a scheme to increase our domestic works..it's a bit related ;)

I was disapointed to see the original post removed, I don't see why it should be, the shop is not up an running, and I was going to offer DIYnot an affiliate program so they earnt money from it to help things here, but to remove the post with no comment I find rude and little bewildering.

Ahhh, I thought they automatically e-mail you explaining the reason, so apparently not !

not wishing to "poke the fire" but i just copy / pasted the following from the terms
You agree that the webmaster, administrator and moderators of this forum have the right to remove, edit, move or close any topic at any time should they see fit.

advertising is one thing not allowed, however a reference to something / other site is

It would be nice if they could explain though, otherwise FWL might put the post in again thinking it has got lost somewhere and not know about it !

fair comment, but it doesn't say they will (or not) i guess its a case of ".........and no corespondance will be entered into" but i also suppose that saves any arguments / bad feelings. it does after all say see fit and advertising is not permited (lets be carefull or we will end up in a debate, and may get this thread locked / deleted)

The thing is Breezer, I was not advertising, I was making people aware of a project on the go.

But hey, do I care a fig, no to be honest. If this place does not respect it's users enough to even post a message to me as to why it should not have been posted, then I don't have any respect for the Moderators and Admin.

I must admit that this is the first forums I have used were no-one is aware who the Moderators are, and as they are active 24/7, there must be more than one I imagine.

but I suppose that if I posted a link to the site, having no affiliation to such, then that would be OK, as I'm not "advertising" am I?

However, that link would probably get removed for collusion...

I can't wait for my genetic ID card, with photo, finger prints and credit score on it...

ps... I agree with FWL... a little courtousy costs nothing and earns much... regardless of the "rules", I'd have thought a first time offender might have got at LEAST a quick note on email to save "embarassment" and "hard feelings"??
