Question on Header Span

Hello , I'm new to the forum an have a question regarding header spans.

I want to remove a wall between my Kitchen and Living room. The span would be 8 feet with 2x6 ceiling joist/rafters only, it is only attic space above. I would like to use 2 - 2x8 with 1/2' plywood between them to keep the height as high as possible and I don't want to recess the header in the attic. What size header is recommended for this span?

You may not realise it but? you have posted on a web site that is UK based.

What may be a problem is that UK Building Regulations will probably be different to the accepted norm in the USA?
