75% of 140 = 0.75 x 140 = 105 ... 105 ÷ 0.75 = 140

Or

3/4 x 140 = (300 + (3x40)) ­÷ 4

(300÷4) + ((3x40)÷4) = 75 + (3x10) = 75 +30 = 105

You could say :-

75/100 x 140 = 75 x 140/100

= 75 x 1.4 = 75 + (4/10 x 75) = 75 + (4 x 75/10) = 75 + (4 x 7.5)

=75 + 30 = 105

er is it not quicker and simpler to do it in your head and divide it by 4 and times the answer by three for this example?

Yep, .. 0.75 x 140 = 105. I see 0.75 as 3/4 and vice versa.
I thought B could do with some exercise in number manipulation. Then he'll be capable on his lonesome.

What about if you half it (50%) :

half of 140 = 70

Then half it again (25%):

half of 70 = 35

Then add the two numbers together (75%):

70 + 35 = 105

So if i had to find a percentage of light bulbs in a house which where low energy

eg. 12 light bulbs in total and 3 where low energy

12 = 100%
6 = 50%
3 = 25% of house with low light energy is this calculation correct.

It's OK, I used to add 17.5% VAT on without a calulator too

That's easy, take 10% add half of that on, then add half of that on again. PoP

got another problem here.

say 65% 0f 180
180 half this is 90
half this is 45 add them together 90 + 45 comes to 135 is this right
