Quick question about cable (flex) sizes please

I searched this site and found this

2.5mm T&E for the socket, 1.5mm T&E for the lighting circuit and 1mm T&E for the switching circuit

I assume you must never use too small a cable but my question is does it matter if you ever use too big a cable?

For example can you use 2.5mm T&E on a lighting circuit assuming all fused properly?

This is not flex you're talking about, is it?

Yes, you can, but you'll struggle with 2,5 in most dom lighting accessories.

And shallow switch boxes, too.

Don't worry most of us now know about the micromark thread.
Use flex if you must rather than T and E

I may as well tell you what I'm doing so you can all laugh.

There's a speaker system in the lounge neatly chased into the walls. I don't use it. It is not speaker wire though but 2.5mm T&E, with the E ignored and the other two connected with speaker connections.

Cunningly I thought I could cut the ends off and use the wire to extend one of my 2amp plug sockets to a new one on the other side of the room without showing any cable! However, as you have said, the thickness of the cable might be a fly in the ointment. I always have these ideas in the dark when there's really nothing I can do about it. I still don't have a good torch. Anyone recommend one?

When I buy the second 2 amp plug socket I will buy a deep back box for it - assuming the connectors take the thick cable

I asked you then how you proposed to connect the micromark light

You replied that you would use flex and connect to a 2 amp plugtop.

Yes I will connect the 2 micromark lights with flex like that but I got carried away with the whole thing and started planning additional lights and sockets in the room. There is no ceiling light so it needs a bit of oomph.

I like that torch too

There are certain regs regarding mains cables in walls and how there run.

So it will depend how these cables are installed at the moment.

As they were for the sound system, they are possibly not in the required

safe zones.

They appear to go along just above skirting board level.

how many corners does the cable go arround?

I would put the new socket a the same level as the cable. It goes around just one corner.

I have an Auto ranging digital multimeter (not that I know how to use it yet ).
